THE LOOP NOTE GEAR EDITOR’S volume 11, issue 1 CELEBRATING ARIZONA OUR COVER STORY THIS ISSUE is our annual celebration of some of the very best golf courses in the world of Troon®, those found in Arizona. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting the Phoenix/Scottsdale, Tucson, or other southern Arizona areas between October and April, you can attest that the weather is great, the courses are in top condition, and the red carpet is out for guests. Longtime favorites such as Boulders Resort & Spa, Troon North Golf Club, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, Lookout Mountain Golf Club, and The Westin Kierland Golf Club are always fun to revisit, while newcomers to the Troon family such as Longbow Golf Club are ripe for discovery. And if you’ve not found your way to the redesigned course at The Phoenician , the two gems at Whirlwind Golf Club, the scenic wonders that await at Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club, Golf Club of Estrella and Eagle Mountain Golf Club, or the fun at Laughlin Ranch Golf Club, there’s no better time than now. We also feature Terravita Golf & Country Club, one of North Scottsdale’s most prestigious private clubs, where a just-completed clubhouse renovation has reinforced the club members’ commitment to continuous improvement. Additionally, as part of our Arizona package, we profile Brianne Kenny, who was recently named Troon’s manager of environmental science, a new corporate position that will enable her to share her biology expertise on a company-wide level, vastly increasing Troon’s footprint as an environmental steward. “Brianne is our secret weapon,” said Jeff Spangler, senior vice president of science and agronomy for Troon. “She has an intellect and a depth of knowledge that just doesn’t exist right now in golf relating to her area of expertise.” Arizona, of course, is home turf for Troon, which traces its roots to Scottsdale some 30 years ago. Today, the company is stronger than ever, with operations having expanded considerably from those early days. As the pages of this publication highlight, Troon now includes Cliff Drysdale Tennis and RealFood Consulting, in addition to management companies Honours Golf, OB Sports, and Green Golf Partners. “We may have expanded across the U.S. and across the world,” said Kris Strauss, Troon’s senior vice president, sales and marketing. “But our hearts will always be in Arizona.” january/february 2020 EDITORIAL editorial director George Fuller george808fuller@gmail.com troon advisory board Brett Brooks, Cyndi Bush, Julia Kelly, Kris Strauss c r e at i v e d i r e c t o r Kevin Gilbert contributing editor Tom Mackin section editors Malcolm Campbell (at large) Joelle Creamer (dining) Scott Kramer (equipment & apparel) contributing writers / photographers / illustrators Aidan Bradley, Dick Durrance, Joey Hanf, Russell Kirk, Kevin Murray, Brian Oar, Joe Passov, Dave Sansom, Paul Severn, Jay Stuller BUSINESS publisher Richard E.
